Legal sports betting in Canada — a plain overview

High-level explainer of Canadian sports betting legality by province. Not legal advice. Start here before any sportsbook CTA.

Canada does not have one sportsbook market. It has a federal criminal-law backdrop and provincial decisions about who may operate, advertise, and take a bet.

This page is education, not legal advice. Rules change. Confirm with your province’s regulator before you deposit.

The short version

  • You must be of legal gambling age where you are (often 19; Alberta is typically 18 — confirm).
  • A book that is licensed in Ontario is not automatically available in Saskatchewan.
  • Offshore sites that take Canadian customers may still be illegal for the operator, the advertiser, or both. OddsNorth’s v1 pages will not send you there.
  • Single-event sports betting was opened up federally in 2021; provinces decide how (or whether) to run it.

What OddsNorth will not do

We will not tell you a grey-market book is “fine because everyone uses it.” We will not publish daily parlays to juce traffic. If a product cannot be explained with a regulator name and an age rule, it does not belong on a review card.
