Basketball moves on news. A single late scratch can swing a total by five points, and the bettors who win at the NBA are usually the ones who saw the injury report first.
The NBA is the only major league where healthy stars regularly sit. Load management on the second night of a back-to-back is standard, and books adjust the moment it is confirmed. Betting before the report drops means betting into uncertainty the book will price better than you do.
Rest advantage is measurable and it is already in the number, but the size of the adjustment varies between books more than you would expect.
Pace is the single biggest driver of an NBA total. Two fast teams meeting produces more possessions and therefore more points, independent of how well either side shoots. Defensive rating alone is a poor predictor of a total.
Live totals move violently, because a single hot shooting quarter is a large fraction of the number. That volatility is why in-play basketball is popular and why it is dangerous.
Points, rebounds, assists and combined markets dominate NBA betting volume. Alternate lines and player milestone markets are widely available at DraftKings, BetMGM and FanDuel. Books also offer NBA player props on lower-usage bench players, which is where numbers are least sharp.
