How to bet on sports in Canada
Nothing about this is complicated, but there are four or five points where people lose money for no reason. Here is the whole process, in order.
Step one: check what is legal where you live
This is the step almost everyone skips. In Ontario you can choose from 49 registered operators. In Alberta, roughly 30 since July 2026. In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan there is exactly one legal site, PlayNow.com. Quebec has Mise-o-jeu+. Atlantic Canada has Atlantic Lottery.
The minimum age is 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, and 19 everywhere else. Our province pages have the specifics for each.
Step two: open the account properly
Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID. Every regulated Canadian book runs identity verification, and a mismatch between your account name, your ID and your bank account is the single most common reason a first withdrawal gets held.
Expect to provide date of birth, address and often the last digits of a government ID. Geolocation checks will confirm you are physically in the province. A VPN will get your account restricted, not around the rules.
Step three: set your limits before you deposit
Every regulated book has deposit limits, loss limits, time limits and self-exclusion built in. Set them on day one, when you are calm and the number is abstract. Setting a limit after a bad night is a decision made by the wrong version of you.
In Ontario, BetGuard now provides centralized self-exclusion across every regulated site in the province, including OLG’s.
Step four: fund it with something you can withdraw to
Interac e-Transfer is the Canadian standard and is supported by most books. Sports Interaction describes e-Transfer deposits as usually clearing inside an hour. BetMGM publishes an eight-hour Interac e-Transfer withdrawal window. DraftKings and PlayNow both support PayPal.
Credit card deposits work at most books but many will not withdraw back to a credit card, meaning your money comes out through a different rail with different timing. Check the withdrawal path before you deposit, not after.
Step five: place the bet
Pick the market, pick the selection, enter a stake, check the potential return, confirm. The number beside your selection is the price, and it can move between the moment you tap it and the moment you confirm. Most books ask whether to accept odds changes automatically. Turn that off until you understand what it costs you.
Start with straight single bets on markets you understand. Parlays and same game parlays carry far higher house margins, and they are the fastest way to donate a first deposit.
Common questions
Do I have to pay tax on sports betting winnings in Canada?
For recreational bettors, gambling winnings are generally not taxable in Canada because they are treated as windfalls rather than income. The picture changes if betting is carried on as a business. This is general information, not tax advice, and anyone betting at scale should speak to an accountant.
How long does a withdrawal take?
It depends on the book and the method. BetMGM publishes about eight hours for Interac e-Transfer. FanDuel advertises payouts in as little as two hours. TonyBet quotes about 24 hours for Interac and up to seven working days for cards. DraftKings cheque withdrawals can take around ten business days.
Can I use a VPN to access a sportsbook from another province?
No. Geolocation is a licensing requirement, and attempting to defeat it will typically get your account restricted and can put your balance at risk.
Before you deposit anywhere
Set a deposit limit the day you open an account, not the day you need one. Every regulated Canadian sportsbook has limit and self-exclusion tools built in, and the provincial help lines on our responsible gambling page are free and confidential.
